All the big little

This is the eighth day of the Love Blog Challenge
hosted by the lovely BelleBrita

and today by Charlene and me!

Prompt for 2/12:
Little things

This little song is framed and hangs in our home. Just a little song about little things. Odd little things, like…

  • Whenever there’s a movie fist-fight, like the one in the Bourne Ultimatum where Jason and Desh are beating each other up in the bathroom, Tim automatically turns down the volume because he knows I can’t stand the sound .
  • I never have and never will put mayonnaise on Rene’s sandwiches.
  • When we watch a football game together, Ana tells everybody to “shush” during the National Anthem just for me.

Little things. Taking her hand during that one song. Leaving the fishing boots out in the garage. Paying the bills. Telling your friends to shush.

Little things. Our unique collections of gestures, idiosyncrasies, habits, preferences, and quirks. The little things family members and close friends remember to do or say that make others in the relationship feel special and understood.

I L-O-V-E the little things. More than the big vacations or jewelry – although those are awfully nice too. I love that Tim remembers it’s milk, not dark, Dove Dots – and no fancy fillings or flavors.

The little things – the simple message of that little song I see every day.

Little drops of water,
Little grains of sand;
Make the mighty ocean,
and the beauteous land.

“Songs and Stories for Mother’s Darling” (1854).

Another verse is: And the little moments, humble though they be, Make the mighty ages of eternity.

The little moments. My lovelies, isn’t that really what makes the world go ’round? We may dream of the big trips and the “multiples of 5” anniversary jewelry, but in truth, every single little moment is an important piece in our lives and the lives of our friends and families.

We take great pains to select the right college and job and house – and spouse. But each and every decision we make has been shaped and influenced by the minutes, hours, days, weeks and years that came before. The moment-by-moment, seemingly trivial decisions lead us step-by-step to who we are today. And what happens today will continue to affect and mold our individual and collective tomorrows.

Each drop of water, each grain of sand an integral part of the beauty of the ocean and the land. And each time we use butter instead of mayonnaise, turn down the volume, or make her a hamburger instead of a ham steak, we place a tally in the I know you column.

Because doing the little things is one of the sweetest ways I know to say I love you.

    1. Thanks, Alessia – I bought the little framed print at a garage sale because it had a white frame and was musical. I didn’t really think about those words until the Love Blog Challenge started pokin’ at me… xoxox

  1. Oh what a wonderful song! It’s such a great reminder to notice the little things. And you’re right! It’s the little things that make the world go around!

  2. I love this post and feel so encouraged by your words about even the big decisions just being an accumulation of all the small moments everyday that led us there. I often feel anxious about those big decisions, but this thought is really helpful. Thank you for sharing!

    1. In the movie A Sound of Thunder (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Sound_of_Thunder) a man travels back in time a zillion years and accidently steps on a butterfly. When he returns to the present, there are slight changes in the world. I’m not sure a butterfly could affect the history of man, but I’m quite sure that making the best decisions for me and my family, no matter how small, will affect our futures. Yes – small moments matter…xoxox

  3. Sometimes we are so busy that those little things go unnoticed or they have become expected or unappreciated. Reading this now and how ours lives have changed since you wrote this brings a whole other meaning as we have slowed down, smelled the Rose’s and have changed priorities. Thank you. Xoxo
