All the big little

Prompt for 2/12: Little things

This little song is framed and hangs in our home. Just a little song about little things. Odd little things, like…

• Whenever there’s a movie fist-fight, like the one in the Bourne Ultimatum where Jason and Desh are beating each other up in the bathroom, Tim automatically turns down the volume because he knows I can’t stand the sound .
• I never have and never will put mayonnaise on Rene’s sandwiches.
• When we watch a football game together, Ana tells everybody to “shush” during the National Anthem just for me.

Little things. Taking her hand during that one song. Leaving the fishing boots out in the garage. Paying the bills. Telling your friends to shush.

Little things. Our unique collections of gestures, idiosyncrasies, habits, preferences, and quirks. The little things family members and close friends remember to do or say that make others in the relationship feel special and understood.

I L-O-V-E the little things. More than the big vacations or jewelry – although those are awfully nice too. I love that Tim remembers it’s milk, not dark, Dove Dots – and no fancy fillings or flavors.

The little things – the simple message of that little song I see every day.

Little drops of water,
Little grains of sand;
Make the mighty ocean,
and the beauteous land.

Another verse is: And the little moments, humble though they be, Make the mighty ages of eternity.

The little moments. My lovelies, isn’t that really what makes the world go ’round? We may dream of the big trips and the “multiples of 5” anniversary jewelry, but in truth, every single little moment is an important piece in our lives and the lives of our friends and families.

We take great pains to select the right college and job and house – and spouse. But each and every decision we make has been shaped and influenced by the minutes, hours, days, weeks and years that came before. The moment-by-moment, seemingly trivial decisions lead us step-by-step to who we are today. And what happens today will continue to affect and mold our individual and collective tomorrows.

Each drop of water, each grain of sand an integral part of the beauty of the ocean and the land. And each time we use butter instead of mayonnaise, turn down the volume, or make her a hamburger instead of a ham steak, we place a tally in the I know you column.

Because doing the little things is one of the sweetest ways I know to say I love you.
